First Day of School

Hi All,

I still can't get the photos to upload through Hello, so you'll have to be kind with me as there are problems with the network. I have submitted my request to get on the wireless network at UL, so we'll see how long it takes them to get me hooked up to that.

We had our first day of classes today. It went well for the most part. I am taking a comparative capital punishment class, a class on European legal history, and a comparative religious institutions class. I wish I could say that it is interesting, but it is all stuff that I find completely trivial and will pretty much in no way help me with what I want to do with my legal education. Nonetheless, it counts for credits for my international trade certificate, and I can appreciate that.

The professor from Nebraska has failed to engage any students in this class, which makes for a very long and very boring hour. He also likes to take the legal opinions and streach the logic to the extremes. It helps point out the various arguments that one could make on an issue, but it is so far fetched that I find myself wanting to interject and say "I don't think the justice was trying to be that extreme." I guess I've never had a professor who points out the extremes and doesn't really put a picture together. It's not the socratic method, it's not lecture, it's just nonsense.

The Irish professor is actually an American who teaches law at UL. Law degrees in Ireland, like most European countries, are equivalent to an undergraduate class. The course is taught in all lecture with powerpoints, and the final is a multiple choice test with an essay which he already gave us the question to. It does not engage me either, but it's a nice slow pace for the summer.

Westerbeke is teaching the comparative religion class, and if you have had him, you know he's a very active teacher. The hour flew by, but since it's a religion class, I feel like some kids will be saying crazy things from time to time. It should prove to be quite entertaining once they do.

I'm looking to fly to leads for the 14th through the 16th to visit friends. I'll let you know if that pans out. Keep up the text messages, they're great!.

Tom
